WK Turnen levert Rotterdam 6,5 miljoen euro op

WK-welkomstbanieren voor Oranjeteam

UTRECHT - Op 16 januari 2011 werd tijdens jaarlijkse nieuwjaarsreceptie van de KNGU aan de turn(st)ers van het Nederlandse WK-team dat in actie kwam in Ahoy Rotterdam, een kleine replica van ‘hun’ welkomstbanier geschonken door Paul de Jager, directeur van Shipmate, het bedrijf dat de speciale vlaggen sponsorde.

De originele welkomstbanieren worden door Shipmate geschonken aan de verschillende verenigingen van de Oranjeturners. Op de site van Shipmate staat een youtube-filmpje met een leuke compilatie over deze bijzondere WK-gadgets. Arjen Butter en Carlo van Minde kregen tijdens het WK de eer om de Oranjevlaggenparade te hijsen.

Erasmusspeld ook door realisatie WK turnen 2010

ROTTERDAM - Hans Zoethoutmaar heeft op 2o december 2010 de Erasmusspeld van de Gemeente Rotterdam opgespeld gekregen. Hij kwam in aanmerking voor de Erasmusspeld omdat hij zich op sociaal, sportief en economisch gebied gedurende een lange periode van jaren verdienstelijk heeft gemaakt voor de Rotterdamse samenleving.

Hans Zoethoutmaar is vanaf het eerste uur betrokken geweest bij Rotterdam Topsport dat inmiddels twintig jaar bestaat. Het succes van de grote topsportevenementen in Rotterdam is voornamelijk zijn verdienste geweest. Onder meer de halve finale van de Davis Cup in 2001, de UEFA Cup finale in 2002, het WK Turnen 2010 in Ahoy Rotterdam, en de Grand Départ van de Tour de France dit jaar zijn van hem afkomstig geweest. Verder staat er nog een WK Squash, een EK Boksen voor vrouwen en een EK Handbal gepland voor de komende jaren.

De organisatiecommmissie van dat WK en alle vrijwilligers die meehielpen zouden dus ook een speldje opgespeld kunnen krijgen, dat ze dat WK voor elkaar hielpen krijgen

Shannon Miller’s vision on the Worlds ‘10

ROTTERDAM/ARNHEM – Met toestemming van de beheerder van de hyve van Sportcentrum Papendal mochten we dit interview met Shannon Miller overnemen op GymPOWER, welk artikel gepubliceerd is op 30 oktober 2010. De wereldberoemde Amerikaanse superturn-ster uit de jaren ‘90 (in bv dat heroïsche Amerikaanse turnteam op de OS van 1996 in Atlanta)  vertelde aan Sem over alles wat ze gezien heeft in Ahoy Rotterdam. Shannon is nog niet eerder in Nederland geweest, ze zal eerdaags een keer bij Sportcentrum Papendal in Arnhem op bezoek gaan. Verder was ze ook erg te spreken over de WK-verslaggeving van GymPOWER en mochten we dus ook van haar dit interview overnemen

I will proudly present you the comments and interview with Shannon Miller (USA) the Olympic and Worldchampion Artistic Gymnastics! Shannon will give her vision about the 42th World Championships Artistic Gymnastics 2010 in Ahoy Rotterdam. This interview contains the review of the Countries Competitions, All-Around of the men & women and about the Final Apparatus. I have asked Shannon several questions about the women gymnast of the USA, Russia and China, also about the worldchampions Kohei Uchimura (Japan) and Aliya Mustafina (Russia). And ofcourse she will look to the organization in Ahoy Rotterdam, because she couldn’t follow the competitions live on Broadcast-TV at Jacksonville-USA. Please enjoy this interview with America’s most lovely gymnastics legend…

1. The USA behind Russia by the women’s contest, are you disappointed?

Every team, every country wants gold; that’s what you work so hard for day in and day out. Of course, I am a big fan of Team USA but I am also a fan of great gymnastics. We saw some really incredible skills being performed by these athletes. Russia was incredible on Vault. Mustafina was so much fun to watch. I love her fiery attitude and work ethic. Alicia Sacramone was the rock, the veteran that the US needs. Bross continues to impress. The Chinese were incredible, even with a few errors, on the uneven bars. It was good to see a fairly healthy Romanian team perform. They have such an amazing history in the sport. I can’t wait to see how they look a year from now. However, I was surprised overall at how many mistakes were made by almost all the teams. It’s a building year so it could be that everyone is just working out the bugs preparing for the Olympic year!

2. On FX the fall of Mattie Larson by her double hooked, just bad luck or maybe nervous?

Always hard to say. Sometimes you train and train and everything seems to be perfect and it all falls apart at the competition. Other times you get lucky and everything works out. It looked to me like she just ran out of gas, was a little tired, by the end of her routine. That could be a combination of long work hours, pushing your body to the max each day and even the time change. However, every athlete has to deal with those things and when it comes to selecting the Olympic team it’s important for each athlete to show that she can compete successfully under any circumstances.

3. The women of China also have made big mistakes on Bars and Beam, they have lost some important points, luck for the USA or is the pressure by the Chinese women too high?

The Chinese have a history of making major mistakes when they are within range of clenching the gold. They were able to overcome that history at the 2008 Olympics but it seems to have returned. With the heavy deductions that a fall brings it is more important than ever to be able to hit your routines. While a high start value certainly helps, in the end, whoever makes the fewest mistakes wins!

4. Mustafina was the star bij the Russian team, also the next number one by the Allround?

She’s got my vote. What in an incredible talent. Mustafina reminds me a lot of myself (although i believe she is much more talented). She doesn’t take anything for granted and is very focused on her goals. What a beautiful gymnast and exquisite in her performance. She certainly is making a name for herself with the judges and audience alike. I could defeintly see her taking the AA title.

5. Do you think Rebecca Bross will defeated Bridget Sloan this time?

I think both athletes have a great shot but Bross is hungry. She is a workhorse and sometimes being second makes you work even harder. She is coming off of a fantastic win at the US National Championships and has that momentum behind her. If both athletes are healthy and ready to go, it’ll be close. Although I think Bross might just edge Sloan this time around. Regardless, having such talent on the US team is a bonus when it comes to Olympic preparation.

6. Did you also see new women talents by this contest and can you name some gymnasts.

I am in the United States working at several events this week and was unable to see the complete competition but did watch the coverage on the US Network. The focus was on the top four teams. The one gymnast I can’t stop talking about is Mustafina. I am excited to watch how she performs during the rest of the competition. And I love watching the Chinese on balance beam and uneven bars. I hope to see a little cleaner routine during the next round but they are simply beautiful to watch.

7. What’s your opinion about the Jury, do they have done a great job or are they too slow?

Because I was only able to see the television coverage it was difficult to tell how fast or slow the judges were. Once it’s packaged for television a lot of that extra time is cut out.

8. And what about the men’s competition, will Jonathan Horton keeps Chen Yibing away?

I’m so excited to watch the men’s competition. Kohei Uchimura (Japan) will be tough competition. Lu Bo (China) is capable as well. However, Horton, when he is “on” is tough to beat. We don’t want to forget about Danell Leyva, from the US as well. And don’t forget to watch Danell’s father while he is competing. He does his own “routine” on the sidelines! Chen Yibin is going to be tough competition on Still Rings but not vying for the top spot in the All Around. We always focus on the outcome; gold, silver, bronze but I think we are also going to see some amazing gymnastics! The Russian men are fantastic on floor exercise. Maxim Deyvatovskiy with a full twisting double layout and David Belyavskiy with his double twisting double pike. I mentioned Chen Yibin’s Still Ring set is one you don’t want to miss. Vault will be exciting with some big scores being thrown for some even bigger vaults. I’m also looking forward to seeing Fabian Hambuechen compete again. I’ve watched him since I did the commentary for the 2004 Olympics where he was so young and has truly become a staple for men’s gymnastics in Europe and around the world.

9. Do you have seen new elements by the women, so yes which one?

I saw a lot of exciting gymnastics. Most impressive were a few of the uneven bar releases (China) and yurchenko 2 ½ twist vaults (Russia). Alicia Sacramone has an amazingly powerful Vault that is simply undeniable. I’m am really looking forward to the All around finals to see a little more coverage of athletes that may not have been included in the Team finals television coverage.

10. Tomorrow the Allround competitions, do you have your points about the USA-women?

The most important thing for the US Women to remember is to stay clean and steady. The All-Around competition is difficult because you’ve already been through qualification and the Team finals. It’s easy to get tired and critical to be rested and ready.

11. Are you still involved with Gymnastics?

I am. I was just at the US National Gymnastics Championships doing the radio broadcasting. And I am now honorary Chairman of the AT&T American Cup that will be in Jacksonville, Florida in March. I love talking about the sport and watching the incredible gymnasts. In fact, there is a new social network for gymnasts called www.GymnastSpotlight.com where gymnasts, coaches, fans and parents can go to talk about gymnastics, upload video and pictures, ask questions and chat with me about the sport! It’s so much fun!

12. The All-Around by the men, Uchimura first, Boy second and Horton third… surprise you?

I don’t think this is too surprising. Uchimura stole the show winning by over 2 points. He is an incredible gymnast with one of the highest levels of difficulty and competed superb even with a nagging shoulder injury. It was wonderful to see Germany’s Philip Boy take the silver. I think it may have even surprised him, however, with very clean routines and few errors he did exactly what was needed to take the second place spot. For Jonathan Horton, bronze was a fantastic stepping stone. He clearly wants Gold but has certainly maintained his place on the world stage. Silver would have been in his grasp were it not for a few steps on vault. With Uchimura’s difficulty and execution there is no room for error from any of his competitors.

13. On Pommelhorse the Russian Deviatovski made 2 big mistakes, what was wrong with him according your opinion?

Pommelhorse is always a critical event. Deviatovski was second after rotation 5 and needed to hit a very clean set since Pommelhorse is a lower scoring event than the rest. He was moving so well through the first part of his routine but with major breaks toward the end it was a complete melt down and took him out of contention for a medal. That’s heartbreaking to watch because most athletes have been there at some point in our career. I remember the 2003 World Championship balance beam finals when I fell three times in one routine. I just wanted to crawl under a table and hide I was so embarrassed. Once you make a mistake like that it’s difficult not to get distracted mentally thinking about your score and that you may have missed a medal. Of course that mentality can also lead to further errors that just compound the mistakes. It will be difficult not to think about that routine for a while but he can use this experience to light the fire within to go home and train even harder for the next competition.

14. Jonathan Horton is a hard fighter, could he defeat Kohei Uchimura finally with his good shape?

I think Jonathan certainly has the capability to compete for the gold medal in London. He had a great competition but it was not without mistake. Horton is also working on some upgrades over the next year. Not only does he have the talent to compete for that top spot but he has incredible desire to be number one. However, Horton admits that it won’t be easy, Horton was quoted saying “he is a machine” in regards to Uchimura. That was certainly high praise from the American and very deserved. It is incredibly difficult and very rare for an athlete to retain a world title over the span of two years. I’m excited to see these two compete again next year!

15. Did you also have other names by the mens contest for the top 3?

Maxim Devyatovsky (Russia) was certainly in the hunt. But as gymnasts and gymnastics fans we know that anything can happen and unfortunately pommel horse stole his chance at a World AA medal this time around. Uchimura was clearly above the pack and the rest have some work to do in order to keep up. I would have like to see Germany’s rock star, Fabian Hambuechen compete in the All Around competition. He is always an impressive and fun athlete to watch.

16. You’ve already told about Mustafina, she’ll be the number one this time by the womens All-around, are you satisfied?

I think Mustafina was brilliant. I love her gymnastics, her fiery attitude and excellent skill. I like that she never assume she will win but makes sure she completely finishes every routine before celebrating. I am also very impressed with her confidence. I announced a competition in the United States for my Gymnastics television show in 2006 where she won the gold. I knew back then that this was as incredible talent from Russia and I’m excited to see her doing so well. I love to the United States on top and I am sure they will be back home working hard. Mostly I enjoy watching great gymnastics because I know how hard these athletes work each day to be the best.

17. Could Rebecca Bross defeat Mustafina with her performances?

I think it will be good competition heading into the 2012 Olympic Games. If both athletes are healthy and both hit their routines it will be a tough call for the judges to make. There is still a long time until the 2012 Olympics and we may see other gymnasts come on strong and compete for the number one position. For now, there is not too great a gap and a healthy and consistent Bross could certainly compete for the top spot.

18. About Ana Porgras (Romania) will she be the one of the talents who pull her country back again in gymnastics competitions?

Porgras will help Romania get back on track as will coaches Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang. She is a consistent gymnast but will certainly have to work on the difficulty level of her vault in order to help her team on that event and also compete for one of the All Around positions. I am looking forward to watching her on balance beam during the event finals. She is beautiful to watch.

19. Bridget Sloan, Worldchampion 2009, was mostly on the background, can you tell me why she is not shining on this All-around?

Bridget only competed balance beam at the US Championships and unfortunately, she did not perform spectacular during the preparation or preliminary rounds at the World Championships. Sloan is certainly talented and I look forward to seeing her healthier and better prepared as we head into next year. It’s always difficult to come back from injuries but it’s better to be doing that now than a year and a half from now.

20. Can you give me your personally comment, in the general sense, about the US men and women in the All-around contest, what was the most best or bad review you can remember of these gymnasts?

Bross and Raisman both started off with terrific performances but unfortunately faultered on routines (Beam and Bars respectively). Bross had a strong competition but an uncharacteristic fall on the balance beam. It was devastating to watch as she tried very hard to save her Arabian skill. Like a true performer she came back strong on floor exercise to earn the bronze medal. Although I am sure she is happy to win a spot on the podium, I am sure it is still heart breaking to receive the bronze medal after last year’s near miss of the AA Gold medal to her teammate Bridget Sloan. Bross is a fighter and I hope that she does not allow her misses at the last two World Championships to become a mental block in the years to come. If she can stay healthy she has a long and illustrious career ahead. Raisman did a tremendous job for being fairly new to the world scene. She has such amazing confidence for a young athlete. I love that nothing seems to faze her. She will be a terrific asset to team USA in the years to come. She, of course, trains with one of the best gymnasts in the world, Alicia Sacramone, who will no doubt give her plenty of tips and support along the way.

21. If you have other important questions for to fullfill this questions list…!

I am tremendously optimistic about the sport of gymnastics and look forward to next year and certainly the 2012 Olympic Games. I miss the “perfect 10” scoring system as do many spectators and fans of the sport. I hope that one we will get back to that system. For now, it’s wonderful to see dedicated gymnasts and exciting skills from all over the world. I am also excited to see the resurgence of the Russian team and look forward to the rebuilding of the Romanian team prior to the 2012 Games. As a competitor, I always wanted to compete with the best and if we keep on this path 2012 will prove to be a very exciting year!

22. On Floor by the men the Greek Kosmidis won with the most difficult acrobatic elements, have you ever seen such elements before or even by your competitions?

Greece has a tremendous history of great floor men. He nailed his double double to open. He has very high difficulty but many times the title comes down to steps on the landings. Kosmidis really focused on stuck landings throughout and that attention to detail earned him a gold medal. It is a wonderful lesson for some of the younger athletes to learn. The small errors can really add up, so focus on the details.

23. On Pommelhorse the old fellow Krisztian Berki (Hungaria) finally won his first world tittle, please will you tell how you look this great performance and mostly of his high scissors!

Wow! It’s not easy to win a gold medal when you are the first athlete up on the apparatus. He set the bars so high that no other athlete could keep up. He has incredible long lines, perfect angles and form throughout. Such an exciting performance!

24. On Vault by the women, Alicia Sacromene was the number one and beat the favourite Mustafina! Just a very close finish, do you have expected this from Alicia?

Absolutely! Both have incredible vaults but Sacramone has long been world contender in this event. She has power unlike any other gymnast. In addition to power and skill she is a veteran competitor, that’s an almost unstoppable combination.

25. By the Rings, without Yuri van Gelder, the Chinese Chen Yibing was surely the King on this apparatus, am I right?

I believe Yibing had the highest score in the entire competition (not counting vault which is a high scoring event) Yibing is simply magic. He makes his routine, the strength, look so easy. Again, he focuses on the stuck landing to put the exclamation point on his routine making it impossible for any other athlete to catch him. It’s so much fun to watch beautiful gymnastics!

26. On Vault the Franchman Thomas Bouhail has jumped 2 difficult elements, such an explosive style and rotations! Was he also the real champion this time?

Golotsutskov was spectacular right from the beginning. There were many spectacular vaults. However, Bouhail’s vaults were higher, cleaner and more powerful that the rest of the competition.

27. On Beam your favourite gymnast has won this apparatus, could Rebecca Bross or Deng Linlin beat Ana Porgras with her great performance?

Rebecca Bross came back from the fall in her AA competition on this event to do a spectacular routine during the event finals. She is very aggressive through her routine and will continue to excel on this event as she gets healthy. She will definitely be a contender on this event. Deng Linlin is simply amazing. She has so much difficulty throughout her routine. If she becomes consistent on this event and works on making her routine a little more fluid she will do very well. Ana Porgras qualified in the top spot coming in and maintained that consistency during the final round. She has a few balance checks throughout her routine but she is wonderful to watch. She is very fluid in her movement and shows the beauty of gymnastics.

28. On Parallel Bars the Chinese men are just powerful, are they ruled this apparatus since many years, do yo think?

China was not as much of a contender over other parts of the competition as i would have expected. However, I think they continue to be a powerhouse. They have had a long history of great gymnastics and I am sure they will continue to do great things in the sport. They certainly proved their expertise during the parallel bar performance with great skill and nice form. I was fairly surprised that Uchimura (Japan) did not finish higher. He has been so much fun to watch. He makes gymnastics look so easy, while doing some of the toughest gymnastics ever!

29. On Bars by the women, good old Elizabeth Tweddle was the best of all on her favourite Bars? How many difficult elements are you counting? Is she still the Queen of the Bars?

With two very freak accidents by the Chinese it was an interesting Uneven Bar final. Without those falls the standing would certainly have been much different. However, every athlete knows that anything can happen. China opening the door and Tweddle took that opportunity and ran with it. She has long been an incredible uneven bar worker and certainly proved that age does not matter. She was brilliant!

30. On High Bar, the most sensationable apparatus, the Dutchman Epke Zonderland allready thought he was the number one, but unfortunately Zang Chenglong blew up his fortune dream! Even Fabian Hambüchen could not overcome his performance with his 4 flying elements and became the number three of the world! Did you expect these results after all?

Epke was fabulous!!! What a tremendous performance. Under the pressure of performing in his home country he really put on a show for the crowd. I love that he has the high flying skills and truly adds excitement to his routines. He had my vote for the Gold! Fabien is always exciting on this event and always in the top few athletes. He is another one of my favorites. He too will want the gold in 2012 and it should be a tough competition. I was very surprised that Chenglong received the gold. His routine was difficult but not terribly exciting and not as beautiful as Zonderland. I look forward to watching Epke compete in the future and feel confident he will get his gold medal.

31. Have you enjoy this 42th World Championships Artistic Gymnastics 2010 in Rotterdam?

The competition was wonderful! I had my first son, Rocco, last year at this time so I did not attend many major competitions in 2009. It’s great to be back involved with the sport at the US National Championships and now the World Championships. I am very much looking forward to seeing many of these excellent athletes in the 2012 Olympic Games.

32. Can you mention some highlights of this championships?

There were some incredible moments during the competition. The Russian women taking back the crown after a long absence from the top spot. USA’s Alicia Sacramone clenching the gold on Vault. He Kexin on bars (even with the fall she is simply beautiful to watch). Jonathan Horton winning the AA bronze medal. Uchimura giving another command performance to be a back-to-back AA gold medallist. Fabian Hambüchen is Mr. Gymnastics and is always exciting to watch. There were too many great moments to list. I love it all!!

33. Is there a woman gymnast you’ve seen as a little Shannon Miller on this championships?

I think she is far better and has more personality, but I feel like Mustafina’s all-around capabilities are akin to my career. She excels under pressure and doesn’t seem fazed by anything going on around her. She wants to win and is willing to work hard to get there.

Sophie en Frank Deurloo over hun WK in Ahoy

RIDDERKERK/ROTTERDAM  – Niemand krijgt bij de geboorte een handleiding of gebruikswijzer mee. Als je kind bevangen wordt door het turnvirus en ook nog groot talent blijkt te hebben, dan wordt het plots een heel ander levensverhaal. Maar ook de ouders doen aan topsport. Dan haalt je kind daadwerkelijk het nationale WK-team en komt alles in een vermenigvuldigde versnelling. Zeker in Nederland met het WK in eigen land, met alles er omheen, waren het enerverende tijden. We spraken Sophie en Frank Deurloo, die regelmatig ook voor GymPOWER verslag doen, en vroegen naar hun ervaringen. Zoon Bart turnde met Oranje tijdens het WK voor eigen publiek in Ahoy. Hij werd door kersverse Bondscoach Sadao Hamada tijdens de WK-kwalificatieronde ingezet als tweede meerkamper voor Oranje, en met 84,998 pt eindigde hij als 52ste van de wereld, in een deelnemersveld van de 299 turners.

Hoe voelt het als je kind meedoet aan een WK en dan ook nog eens heel dichtbij

Frank: “Heel bijzonder, spannend, trots en onvoorstelbaar dat het je eigen kind is die er aan meedoet. Omdat het zo dichtbij was, leefden de mensen om ons heen veel meer met je  mee. Vanaf het begin dat ik hem afzette in het Van der Valk Hotel, begon het bij mij al te kriebelen. Nu gaat het gebeuren! Gaat alles goed, blijft hij heel, want dat is toch het belangrijkste.”

Sophie: “Wij gingen naar de podiumtraining, om ook een beetje in de sfeer te komen. Wij kwamen van het busstation, liepen in de richting van Ahoy en zagen de vlaggen van de turners en turnsters hangen, de tranen sprongen spontaan in mijn ogen. Alles voelt emotioneel en spannend, misschien ook om alles wat er gebeurd is… We voelden ons vereerd met de VIP kaart, heel luxe. Het was leuk om mensen te ontmoeten, die in het bestuur zitten en ouders van de dames, want die kom je normaal gesproken nooit tegen. Het was een eenheid, iedereen leefde met elkaar mee. Dan de dag van de wedstrijd, zenuwen gieren door onze lichamen en opgekrulde tenen in de schoenen en Frank kruipt van ellende weg achter zijn fotocamera.”

Frank: “We zaten met vrienden, die volgens mij net zo meeleefden. Er werd gejuicht en geschreeuwd, het ging goed!! Jammer dat Bart met voltigeren eraf ging. Mooi, maar zenuwentoestel. Ja, het einde kennen we allemaal, een mooie 17e verdiende plaats, op naar Tokio. Mannen zet hem op!”

Jullie andere twee kinderen turnen niet (meer). Hoe beleefden zij het, gingen ze kijken? Hoe vond Bart het denk je?

“De oudste, Koen, heeft niet zoveel met turnen, maar informeert wel regelmatig naar Bart. Hij zal niet snel komen kijken, maar leeft toch wel mee. Thomas heeft zelf geturnd en heeft nog steeds het turnvirus wel. Hij is ook weer met turnen begonnen. Bart maakt het niet zo uit, hij is daar niet zo mee bezig. Hij weet dat we achter hem staan we hebben een hecht gezin en dat is voor hem belangrijk.”

Hadden jullie voor het begon gedacht dat ze een plaats tussen de beste 24 zouden halen? Met alle heisa eromheen? Hoe stond Bart er voor? En het Oranjeteam? Waren ze strijdbaar?

“We vinden het moeilijk om van ons eigen kind iets te zeggen. We weten wel, dat Bart een perfectionist is en vaak filmpjes zit te  analyseren van zijn idolen en dat hij het FIG-codeboek beter uit zijn hoofd kent dan zijn schoolboeken. Als we de mensen om hem heen mogen geloven, dan staat hij er goed voor en er zit zeker progressie in, maar het allerbelangrijkste is dat hij heel blijft.
We hebben alle mannen zien turnen en het is heel simpel, het zijn stuk voor stuk kanjers. Ze zijn 17e geworden dat is ongelooflijk, na wat er allemaal gebeurd is. Het team stond er jong en fris, dit is een basis om door te groeien, beter te worden. Voltigeren moet zeker sterker worden, maar wij zijn als ouders zeer trots op alle knullen.”

Jullie zijn bij de podiumtraining wezen kijken, probeerden zoveel mogelijk van het toernooi te zien en legden zoals altijd veel vast, in beelden en verslagen, o.a ook voor GymPOWER. Is het nog steeds puur je zoon ondersteunen of zijn jullie ondertussen ook door het turnvirus bevangen?
“Natuurlijk komt Bart voor ons op de eerste plaats, maar het turnen boeide mij al voor de geboorte van Bart, want ik heb zelf volop geturnd. Mocht ook ooit naar Papendal, maar dat mocht niet van mijn ouders. Daarna heb ik 25 jaar gymles gegeven en jazzdans. Frank volgde altijd, maakte toen al vele foto’s, zodoende rolde hij er ook in. We hebben zeker wel het turnvirus in ons.”

Hebben jullie een favoriet, buiten je zoon om? En het damesturnen op het WK, zijn jullie daarnaar ook wezen kijken?
Sophie: “Ik heb zeker een favoriet, Uchimura en natuurlijk onze eigen vice-wereldkampioen Epke. We zijn zeker bij het dames turnen geweest, omdat ik vind, dat je zulke dagen met elkaar moet beleven. Je bent tenslotte één geheel.”

Nog leuke dingen meegemaakt of gehoord dezer dagen, of boeiende mensen gesproken? Hoe was het om dit WK in Ahoy mee te maken?

“Leuke dingen waren de jonge Twittermannen van GymPOWER, Karl Kosztka en Axel Quist. Ze hebben dit zo goed gedaan, met af en toe wat humor. Je zag ze genieten van alles en liepen daar rond als jonge verslaggevertjes… Waar ik ook van genoten heb is, dat je op zo’n moment een grote turnfamilie bent, die allemaal met elkaar meeleven… Boeiende mensen, ja wat zijn boeiende mensen. Maxima en Alexander met de kids. Zo ik had wel even in de plaats van andere Sophie (Epke’s moeder) willen zitten Maar even serieus, ik heb met veel leuke mensen gesproken.” 

Willen jullie nog iets kwijt…

“Wat wij hopen is, dat het vervelende gebeuren rond Yuri van Gelder een positieve wending mag krijgen, dat het op een goede correcte manier wordt uitgepraat en dat het nu eens niet negatief in de media komt te staan, daar is de turnsport een te mooie sport voor. Wat heb je aan onenigheid en ruzie, dat is er toch immers al genoeg in de wereld… Verder hopen we dat de turnsport verder mag groeien, dat we door het NOC*NSF als serieuze sport worden gezien en zeker bij de acht uitgekozen sporten horen. Kom op NOC*NSF:  geef de turnsport een kans, wij hebben het zo hard nodig!”

Top acrogym tijdens WK in Ahoy

ROTTERDAM – Donderdag 21, vrijdag 22 en zaterdag 23 oktober 2010 hebben de teams van Adonis Drachten en Landstede Sportacrobatiek Zwolle acrogymdemonstraties verzorgd tijdens de finaledagen van het WK turnen in Ahoy Rotterdam. Arno Diender van de hyve Acrogym Nederland was erbij en bracht verslag uit in tekst en beeld.

Donderdag kwam het seniorentrio van Adonis Henrieke Koopman, Marion Dijkstra en Denise Meester in actie en vrijdag het juniortrio en clubgenoten Manon vd Meer, Mare Blaam en Jeaninne Loman, en het Zwolse damespaar Maja ter Steege en Veerle Dijkma. Het HGT-acroshowteam van Adonis Drachten was zaterdag te zien vóór de laatste prijsuitreiking van de WK-toestelfinales in een volgepakt Ahoy. Het showteam wist dit jaar de halve finale te bereiken van het populaire RTL 4 programma Holland´s Got Talent 2010. Alle teams deden het prima en maakten goede reclame voor hun sport. Voor de filmpjes moet je je uiteraard vervoegen naar de enige echte wereldberoemde  acrogymhyve van Nederland :)

Trainers Margaretha Plantenga uit Drachten en Ben Romijn uit Zwolle hebben vrijdag eensgezind ook een succesvolle acrogymclinic verzorgd in Ahoy. Via de officiële WK-site kun je een leuke video bekijken van deze clinic. Onder de livestream staan inmiddels vele filmpjes dus je moet even zoeken. Voor een leuke verzameling van de oefeningen in Rotterdam kun je ook terecht op de youtubekanaal van Arno Diender.

Er gaan onder de GymPOWERfans stemmen op, om ook voor de acrosport en de ritmische gymsport ook/weer zo’n prestigieus internationaal toernooi te organiseren in nederland. “Nu zijn wij aan de beurt.” De andere gymdisciplines moeten voor vol aangezien worden, en zouden niet alleen als leuke opvulling gebruikt moeten worden.

Een andere grote fan en voorvechter van de Nederlandse acrosport heeft GymPOWER in ieder geval ook gesignaleerd in Ahoy, ex-voorzitter van de KNGU Frans Koffrie in het gezelschap van zijn echtgenote.

België had het mooiste WK-turnpak

ROTTERDAM – De GymPOWERfans hebben hun voorkeur gemaild en de uitslag is onverbiddelijk. Het WK-pakje van België was het mooiste volgens de meeste stemmers. Onder de juiste inzendingen is de prijs verloot.

De winnaars van de twee kaartjes voor het Univé Gym Gala 2010 in een stad naar keuze (Groningen-Almere-Eindhoven) zijn: Marinka en Ulrike Mullink uit Wehl.

“We hadden tegen iedereen gezegd, kijk naar België die hebben een mooi gaaf pakje. Het viel ons door hun pakje tijdens de podiumtrainig in Ahoy op, dat België erg mooi turnt, vooral hun vloer is super!”

Dames, gefeliciteerd en veel plezier! Iedereen die deelnam aan de prijsvraag: dank je wel!

De winnaressen hebben bericht gehad. De prijs is niet in geld inwisselbaar. Over de uitslag wordt niet gecorrespondeerd. Reis- en parkeerkosten zijn niet inbegrepen.

Oranjefeest in Ahoy: Epke 2e, Jeffrey 8e

ROTTERDAM – Zo kwam er nog een perfecte apotheose aan òns WK, met twee Nederlandse turners die tussen de wereldtoppers een toestelfinale turnden in Ahoy. Jeffrey moest het spits afbijten vandaag en gooide alles in de strijd met twee moeilijke sprongen, doch dat deden de andere 7 finalisten ook. Zijn lef werd niet beloond door de turngoden en hij eindigde als 8e, met 15,750 pt. Epke Zonderland maakte het Oranjelegioen in Ahoy gelukkig met een ijzersterke oefening aan rek, goed voor 16,033 pt en uiteindelijk de zilveren plak. Voor het tweede achtereenvolgende jaar vice-wereldkampioen! Alhoewel de teleurstelling groot was om beide prestaties, brak uiteindelijk wel het goede gevoel van wat deze twee boegbeelden van de vaderlandse turnsport wel voor elkaar kregen: het respect terugwinnen voor ons land in de internationale turnwereld.

Ook op deze laatste wedstrijddag waren er diverse toestelfinales te genieten, die al even spannend als verrassend eindigden.  Daarnaast voor het eerst hier en daar veel boegeroep uit het pubiek voor bepaalde beslissingen van de jury.

Op de pegases waren de sprongen van de ene turner nog verbluffender dan de andere. Fransman Thomas Bouhail haalde in deze Russische roulette het hoogste gemiddelde: 16,449 punten en kon daarmee de wereldtitel opeisen, die Marian Dragulescu niet kon verdedigen dit keer. Bouhail verloor het goud in Beijing 2008 aan de Pool Leszek Blanik door de tie-break rules. In Ahoy zorgde hij maar voor een marge groot genoeg van 0,083 pt Anton Golotsutskov pakte het zilver voor Russia met 16,336 pt gemiddeld. Dzmitry Kaspiarovich uit Wit-Russia hield Hak Seon Yang uit Zuid-Korea van het brons af met een verschil van 0,050 pt :S En zo ging het maar door tot aan nr. 8, Jeffrey Wammes, die 15,750 pt noteerde.

Ana Porgras uit Roemenië, die onder de GymPOWERaars vele fans heeft, deed eer aan de turnlegendes uit haar thuisland en schitterde een keer in volle glorie op de evenwichtsbalk. Goud met 15,366 pt en eindelijk brak die big smile door. Over het algemeen een hoop drama op dit zenuwentoestel uit het damesturnen. Rebecca Bross uit de VS en Deng Linlin uit China deelden samen het zilver met 15,233 pt, waardoor Lauren Mitchell uit Australië met een verschil van 0,033 pt naast het podium belandde (4e).  Russin Aliya Mustafina greep voor het eerst helemaal naast de medailles met een val en een voor haar onwaarschijnlijke score: 13,766 pt. Het blijven gewoon mensjes die turnsters, die fouten kunnen maken ;)

Aliya Mustafina kroonde zichwel definitief tot koningin van Ahoy met 5 medailles, een record sinds Andrea Raducan op het WK van 2001 in Gent volgens International Gymnast,  doch die medaljes waren niet allemaal van goud zoals verwacht. Ze begon goed op vloer, maar maakte weer een misstap: 14.766 pt. Het is ook voor het frêle meisje een loodzware overbeladen week geweest en dat ging z’n tol vragen. Diana Maria Chelaru vond de medaille-oogste wat magertjes voor Roemenië en dacht wat ze op balk kunnen, kan ook op vloer. Ze noteerde net zoveel punten als Mustafina en tekende dus ook voor het zilver. De verrassende Amerikaanse Alexandra Raisman kon met een verschil van 0,050 pt zwaaien naar het erepodium (4e). De allerlaatste turnster die in actie kwam tijdens het WK in Ahoy, dacht als ik toch hier sta, dan maar alles of niets… en het werd alles met een onverwachte historische gouden plak voor Australia van Lauren Mitchell (foto 2). Over de uitslag op dit toestel, met name van publiekslieveling Vanessa Ferrari, was er veel teleurstelling te verwerken.

Tussendoor was de Kroonprinselijke familie aangeschoven bij familie Zonderland op de VIP-tribune, tot groot enthousiasme van het Oranjelegioen in Ahoy. Zeker toen de prinsessen elkaar gingen bewerken met de oranje plastic sticks. Kijk op de eerste foto bij Epke even goed wie er rechtsboven met open mond zit toe te kijken? Eerst nog de finale voor de heren op brug. Het ging bijna aan iedereen voorbij, dat daar een paar wereldtoppers elkaar aftroefden met adembenemend turnen. Wereldkampioen all-around Kohei Uchimura uit Japan turnde de lat hoog: 15,500 pt maar wist dat het niet genoeg zou zijn gezien zijn tegenstanders van wereldniveau. Haibin Teng uit China ging dan ook met gemak daaraan voorbij en scoorde 15,616 punten. De turnheld van onze oosterburen, Fabian Hambüchen, leek aan te sluiten met 15,366 pt, maar dat was niet genoeg (4e). Het goud was met 15,966 pt een prooi voor Zhe Feng uit China, die zijn landgenoot met 0,35 pt aftroefde. Toen kon eindelijk dé WK-toestelfinale beginnen waar de Oranjefans in Ahoy op zaten te wachten.

De ene Chinees Zhe Feng ging als eerste fout. hij viel. Toen Epke Zonderland met een schitterende oefening. Die haalde ook alles uit de kast en noteerde16,033 pt. En daarna kwam er nog een hele lange rij specialisten en wereldtoppers op dit toestel, dus tussen het scanderen van ‘Epke, Epke, Epke’ was de “enthusiastic homecrowd decked out in orange’ muisstil en werd er afgeteld. Onze Duitse oosterbuur Fabian Hambüchen maakte het nog heel spannend met 15,966 pt, maar het venijn zat in de staart. De allerlaatste turner van dit WK, de Chinees Chenglong Zhang bewees afgezien van een virtuoos op rek ook een coole kikker te zijn die zijn zenuwen gewoon in een ijzeren greep hield zolang hij aan de rekstok moest turnen in een kolkende oranje massa mensen: 16,166 pt en het goud was definitief voor China. Eerst grote teleurstelling bij de Oranjefans, doch daarna besefte iedereen wel dat zilver voor eigen publiek op het WK in eigen land ook een heel mooie prestatie is. Epke kon uiteindelijk breeduit glimlachen op het erepodium en het Oranjefeestje kon alsnog beginnen. Dankzij hem staat Nederland ook in het medailleklassement van ons WK… en volgend jaar heb je Tokyo 2011 nog

Winnaars Longines Prize of Elegance ‘10

ROTTERDAM – Longines, het prestigiueze bedrijf uit Zwitserland beroemd om de verfijnde horloges, die alle tijden en uitslagen bijhoudt als tijdswaarnemer en datahandler van evenementen van de FIG, bv het WK turnen 2010 in Ahoy Rotterdam, looft elke wereldtitelstrijd weeer een prijs uit voor de meest elegante turner en turnster. Op 22 oktober 2010 werd na de individuele meerkampfinales bekend gemaakt, dat dit jaar de Japanse Rie Tanaka en Duitser Philipp Boy de sierlijke winnaars waren.

In de jury zat dit keer de voormalige Oranjeturnster en inmiddels afgestudeerde arts Fieke Willems. En de twee gelukkigen… die vonden alle aandacht best en waren zeer vereerd dat ze deze extra prijs naar huis kunnen meenemen.

De Longines Prize of Elegance komt toe aan de gymnasten die gedurende de competitie uitzonderlijke elegantie hebben laten zien. Bij het WK in Ahoy presenteerde het wereldberoemde horlogemerk ook meteen de Longines PrimaLuna collectie.

Belg Truyens 7e in WK-finale voltige

ROTTERDAM – De Belgische turner Donna-Donny Truyens (Blauwput Omnisport) is zevende geworden in een uiterst spannende en hoogstaande finale van het WK Turnen in Rotterdam. De 21-jarige turner met topsportcontract bij Bloso is de eerste Belgische gymnast die er in slaagde een WK-toestelfinale te halen.

Donna-Donny stond, als eerste Belgische gymnast ooit, in een WK-finale en had hiermee al een mooie prestatie neergezet. Er had zeker meer ingezeten voor de GymPOWERfan, want tegen het einde had hij een grote hapering bij het heffen voor de afsprong. De Belg oogde teleurgesteld na zijn optreden, maar heel turnminnend België is fier op zijn prestatie. Hij kon zich gewoon met de wereldtop meten op dit toestel. In Tokyo 2011 ligt een mooie kans op revanche te wachten.

Overigens maakt België grote kans in de GymPOWER-prijsvraag voor het mooiste WK-turnpak.
